Before the first borehole, life in Umueze village in Enugu revolved around water — or rather, the lack of it.
Women rose before dawn to begin the long trek to the nearest stream, balancing heavy jerry cans as they went. The water they brought back was brown and murky, shared by both humans and animals. Children often missed school to help their mothers fetch it.
For the villagers, clean water wasn’t just scarce — it was a dream they no longer believed in.
A Ripple of Change
When the Nugs & Ames Foundation first arrived, we didn’t just bring tools — we brought listening ears.
We met with elders, youth, and mothers to understand their daily struggles. It was clear that a lasting solution couldn’t just be about water — it had to be about empowerment.
Within three weeks, a solar-powered borehole stood proudly at the center of the community. The first gush of clean water drew laughter, tears, and dancing. Children who once carried jerry cans now carried notebooks to school. Mothers began small businesses. Fathers planted crops that flourished.
One elder told us quietly,
“This isn’t just water. This is life returning.”

For Chika, 11 years old, clean water meant the chance to dream again.
“Before the borehole, I missed school so often that my teacher thought I had stopped coming. Now, I’m always early,” she says proudly.
