When the floods swept through Bayelsa State, thousands were left stranded — homes collapsed, roads vanished, and lives were upended overnight. Among the survivors was Ngozi, a mother of three who stood ankle-deep in water, clutching her youngest child as her home drifted away.
For days, she and her children slept on a school corridor, surviving on shared food and borrowed clothes.
When our Nugs & Ames Foundation team arrived, she said softly,
“I don’t need much. Just a place where my children can sleep without fear.”
That simple plea became the foundation for one of our most impactful missions: Safe Haven, our emergency housing and recovery program for displaced families.
From Despair to Shelter
We began by constructing modular shelters — quick-to-build, weather-resistant units designed for comfort and dignity. Within days, families who had lost everything had a roof over their heads, clean water, and medical support.
Children began playing again. Mothers found relief. Fathers started rebuilding.
A community once defined by loss found a sense of belonging again.
“When I saw the shelter, I cried,” Ngozi recalls. “For the first time since the flood, I slept peacefully.”
More Than a Roof
At Nugs & Ames Foundation, we believe shelter is not just about walls — it’s about stability.
That’s why Safe Haven provides mental health counseling, livelihood training, and education continuity programs for displaced families.
In every shelter camp, we create spaces for healing — from play corners for children to workshops that help parents regain purpose.
Rebuilding Lives, One Home at a Time
Our shelters are designed with sustainability in mind — built using locally sourced materials, solar power, and water filtration systems.
We train local artisans to maintain them, creating jobs even in recovery.
Through partnerships with local governments and NGOs, Safe Haven has reached over 5,000 displaced individuals since its launch, providing temporary housing and support services across four Nigerian states.
A Community Reborn
Today, the once-flooded lands of Bayelsa are home again. Families like Ngozi’s have started small shops beside their shelters. Schools have reopened. Laughter echoes where silence once lived.
For us, every shelter built is a symbol of strength — proof that even in the aftermath of disaster, humanity can rebuild from the ground up.
