In a small town in Rivers State, Chidera, a 23-year-old mechanic, spent six months in detention for a crime he didn’t commit. His only “offense” was being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Like thousands of others across Nigeria, he became a victim of a system that too often punishes poverty and powerlessness.
At Nugs & Ames Foundation, we believe that justice is a human right — not a privilege.
Our Justice for the Innocent initiative works to defend the wrongly accused, support victims of abuse, and help rebuild lives torn apart by injustice.
The Fight for Freedom
When our legal aid team first heard about Chidera’s case, we took immediate action.
Within days, our volunteer lawyers filed for his release, gathered witnesses, and challenged the unlawful detention. After weeks of hearings, the charges were dropped — and Chidera finally walked free.
The day he returned home, his mother wept.
He said quietly,
“You gave me back my name. I thought the world had forgotten me.”
Justice Beyond the Courtroom
Our work doesn’t end when the verdict is read.
We conduct legal awareness outreaches, community sensitization workshops, and rehabilitation programs for former detainees and survivors of abuse.
We teach young people their rights, connect families with pro bono lawyers, and train local leaders on mediation and conflict resolution.
For us, justice means more than freedom — it means dignity restored.
Changing the System, One Case at a Time
Each year, our team assists in dozens of legal interventions across Nigeria.
Through partnerships with local bar associations, human rights groups, and the National Legal Aid Council, we’re helping reshape the justice system — case by case, story by story.
We also advocate for policy reforms that promote fair trials, protect vulnerable citizens, and improve prison conditions.
The Road Ahead
Chidera’s story is not an exception — it’s a reflection of countless others still waiting for justice.
We carry their stories as a reminder of why we fight — because silence helps the system, but action saves lives.
At Nugs & Ames Foundation, we will keep standing with the innocent, defending the voiceless, and restoring trust where it’s been lost.
